Colorado Walks is a member of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and supports the National Center for Safe Routes to School initiative. Our goal is to ensure that every child in Colorado has the opportunity to safely walk or bicycle to school.
In 2005, the United States Congress authorized $612 million for Safe Routes to School in Section 1404 of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). Every state is now required to have a Safe Routes to School Coordinator and is guaranteed a minimum of $1 million annually through 2009 to implement Safe Routes to School.
Colorado receives about $1.5 million annually and the Colorado Department of Transportation administers the Safe Routes to School Grant Program in Colorado. For more information contact:

International Walk to School Day - October 3, 2007. Last year, schools from all 50 states participated in the event, and 28% of those surveyed are now initiating or running Safe Routes to School programs. Walk to School Day provides a great incentive to get community partners focused on the goal of getting more children walking and bicycling to schools.
