The purpose of the community development function within Colorado Walks is to increase physical activity through improving community planning and design. Healthy communities focus on the design, spatial, and social aspects of creating safe and inviting community environments that encourage people to walk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls these types of communities "Active Community Environments" (ACE).
Colorado Walks collaborates with local and state government agencies, health and fitness organizations, transportation officials, private businesses, and others to build constituencies that support improving the built environment for pedestrians. We offer our consulting services to local governments and neighborhood groups to conduct "Walkability Audits," design charrettes, community workshops, and training programs that educate stakeholders on the benefits of developing Active Community Environments. Our consulting services are also available for the development of pedestrian plans and/or the pedestrian component of other plans such as comprehensive, transportation, and trail plans.
