The 2007 Pedestrian Summit is a call to action to move pedestrian issues to the forefront of community priorities throughout the state. Join us in Vail to walk the talk and make pedestrians priority one in Colorado.

We are all pedestrians and people of all ages and abilities have the right to walk safely and conveniently for health, fitness, and transportation. Come to this Summit and make a commitment to be part of the solution to creating a legacy of livable / walkable communities in Colorado.

 

COLORADO PEDESTRIAN SUMMIT

September 20-22, 2007

Colorado Walks is hosting the 2007 Colorado Pedestrian Summit in the pedestrian village of Vail, Colorado.  The Summit will bring together elected officials and citizens from communities throughout Colorado with teams of professionals representing health, fitness, schools, and transportation.  Summit participants will learn the critical steps necessary to create strong community coalitions to ensure that pedestrians of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to walk safely throughout their community.

The format of the Summit is short lecture followed by roundtable discussion workshops.  There are no panel discussions - these are truly interactive workshops designed to engage participants in lively discussions and hands-on exercises.  Topics will include policies, developing coalitions and teams, roles and responsibilities, finding local champions, working with elected officials and community leaders, Safe Routes to School, and much more.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER & WORKSHOP FACILITATOR

Mark Fenton

Mark Fenton is one of the most sought after speakers in America.  Known for his high-energy presentations, Mark is as entertaining as he is persuasive.  He is one of the nation's foremost experts on building walkable communities and walking for health, fitness, and transportation.  Currently a consultant for the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation's Active Living by Design Program, Mark's credits include hosting the PBS television series, America's Walking, authoring numerous books including Pedometer Walking and The Complete Guide to Walking for Health, Weight Loss, and Fitness, being a contributing editor to Health and Heart Healthy Living magazines, and former editor-at-large of Walking Magazine.  Mark was a member of the U.S. national racewalking team and coach of the U.S. team at the 1995 World Championships in Beijing and holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT.



VILLAGE MILE WALK/RUN

September 22, 2007

The Summit will conclude on Saturday morning with conference attendees joining Vail residents and visitors in the Village Mile Walk/Run.  The Village Mile is the final event in America's Downtown Mile Race Series & Colorado Walks Miles 2007 season.  Summit attendees are encouraged to bring their families for this exciting and fun one-mile walk/run in the heart of Vail's pedestrian district. 

These mile events celebrate pedestrian friendly downtowns and permanently establish an official one-mile walking route that business districts promote year-round for economic development purposes such as bringing residents and tourists to the area to walk the mile for health and fitness, and then visit local merchants along the route.

ALL Summit participants are automatically registered for the Village Mile.  However, family and friends must register separately:
