The Concrete Connection Fund (CCF) is the cornerstone of the Colorado Walks vision - to make all Colorado communities safe and enjoyable places to walk for people of all ages and abilities - because it will provide local communities with grant funding to leverage other local, state, and federal funding sources to make local sidewalk improvements.
The Concrete Connection Fund receives funds through the net profits of Colorado Walks programs, services, events, memberships, and donations. Colorado Walks goal is to build the Fund to a base level of $5 million and give grants based on the annual investment income. To reach the $5 million goal, we have funding goal of $1 million per year for the next five years. If the $1 million goal is achieved in 2006, the first call for grants will be January 2008.
CCF provides a funding source for local sidewalk system improvements. Most cities and towns in Colorado have extremely tight budgets and sidewalks may be a low priority, in which case they fall into disrepair or are simply not built. That's why the Concrete Connection Fund is so important. Local governments can use grant money from the Fund to repair broken sidewalks or complete missing links in existing sidewalk systems.
Without a basic sidewalk system, people choose not to walk. Engineering walking out of our daily routines is a contributing factor in our expanding waistlines, which can lead to a myriad of health problems that can impact our quality of life or even our lifespan.
Join our call to action to include sidewalks in all transportation projects and make pedestrians a priority in your community!
