Dan Burden has been on the road for ten years helping villages, towns, cities and regions get their feet back on the ground. Since 1996, he has served 2,000 communities in all parts of North America. Dan uses his background as a photographer (see May 1973 National Geographic) to photograph and learn from each community he visits. Dan is known for his ability to teach people how to see their own community with fresh and expanded visions by using his insights in urban planning, transportation, traffic calming, place making, and communication. Many towns invite Dan back for validation and grade cards, guiding their road to economic and community health.
The author of three books on street making and traffic calming, Time Magazine listed Dan as one of the six most important civic innovators in the world. A frequent guest speaker, Dan gave the keynote address at the APWA conference in Philadelphia on the "mourning after" September 12, 2001, and the Transportation Research Board (National Academy of Sciences) selected Dan as its Distinguished Lecturer in 2001.
Before starting Walkable Communities, Dan served as the bicycle and pedestrian coordinator for Florida DOT (1980-1996). In 2005, he joined his Walkable Communities efforts with the specialists at Glatting Jackson, a firm recognized for its excellence in livable communities design and innovative urban transportation planning and design services.
